One more student
representative will be added to the California State University Board of
Trustees, a California State Student Association press release reported.
Gov. Gray Davis signed
the bill into law Aug. 30, according to the student association, which
represents more than 350,000 CSU students. The law will give two students
a voice in CSU policy-making.
AB 213, written by
Assemblywoman Gloria Romero, D-Monterey Park, will go into effect Jan.
1, 2000. Both representatives are to be appointed by the governor.
"A student perspective
should be provided at all CSU board meetings and hearings," Romero said
in the release. "By providing for two student trustees, AB 213 will ensure
that the interests of the diverse student body of the CSU system are well
represented."
The representatives'
two-year terms will be staggered to provide greater continuity. Only one
at a time will have voting privileges, but the other will participate in
all meetings and subcommittees.
The search for prospective
trustees may begin as early as January. Public notices will be posted and
applications will be made available at all CSU campuses. The governor will
select representatives from a list of nominees provided by the student
association. |
