University Police, athletic department online

University Police and the campus athletic department are quickly merging into the fast lane of the Information Super Highway.

A media log, which summarizes suspicious and criminal activities on and near the campus, is now accessible to Cal State Long Beach students through its home page.

"What the service does is provide real time information for incidents that happen on campus," said Greg Pascal, records and communication supervisor for the campus police. "Before, people would have to wait several hours for information by coming down to our department."

Aside from a few glitches, the service is expected to provide information quickly to the campus community.

"There are two bugs that we are currently working on before we release the service to the general public," Pascal said.

The system should be operating in two weeks, according to the campus police. The department has slated Oct.1 to have the system available for online use by the public.

"In the future -- the information will be available to the general public," Pascal said.

But the police department is not the only department on campus that is a mouse click away for students.

The Long Beach State athletic department opened its Web site two weeks ago.

Two guests from the department respond to questions from the public via e-mail. The first guest was LBSU womenís soccer Head Coach Julie Cochran on Aug. 23.

The new men's and women's water polo Head Coach Ricardo Azevedo was the guest on Labor Day, Sept. 6.

"Considering that this is just the second week that we have provided this question-and-answer service, I believe the response has been very positive," said Steve Janisch, director of athletic media relations.

The police media log's Web address is http://test1.upd.csulb.edu/medialog.
