Honor society opens doors to new members

By the end of the year, Beta Alpha Psi, a Cal State Long Beach honor society for accounting students, may need a larger office.

In early August, the national chapter of the society announced that it will open its doors to students who are majoring in finance and information systems.

Betsy Tors, president of the CSULB chapter, said once students realize that there are many opportunities in the business profession, she expects to see an increase in enrollment. About 40 students majoring in accounting were in the society last semester.

"With all the opportunities out there it is a great chance for all these business majors," she said.

However, Tors said she does not expect a huge sign-up right away because of competition with other business societies on campus.

"We are currently trying to get the word out," she said. "And, I donít think students will join right away until they start seeing other students joining."

The change was made to ensure that the organization continues to serve the needs of students and employers.

"Professional service firms have expanded their degree criteria to include finance and information systems majors for the many new assurance services they now offer, as well as for their consulting practices," said Bernard Milano, president of the Beta Alpha Psi national chapter in New York.

Beta Alpha Psiís board approved the new policy after a year-long consultation with faculty, students, administrators and employers from participating chapters.

Under the new requirements, chapters may set eligibility as completion of 30 semester credit hours and an intent to concentrate in accounting, finance or information systems.

With the new rules, students will be eligible for initiation following completion of one advanced course in accounting, finance, or information systems, providing they continue to meet the grade point average or class standing requirement.
