The deeper you are, the longer you will
last.
The Long Beach State women's basketball
team displayed this advantage by cruising to an easy second
half on its way to a 73-60 win at The Pyramid.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
In the season's opener against the University
of San Diego, senior guard Kesha Wade set a milestone when she scored her
1,000th career point as a 49er with a spin-around lay-up about ten minutes
into the game.
Rhonda Smith, the 49ers' 6-foot-8 center,
set the pace with 21 points and four blocks in 28 minutes of play.
She was joined on the court by 13 of her
teammates, who played at least a few minutes.
"Our depth was an advantage out there today,"
Head Coach Dallas Boychuck-Bolla said.
"You always want to come out strong and
win the first game (of the season)," she said. "It was a good game because
last year we were 11-1 at home and we want to keep that home-court advantage."
The women got off to a slow start against
the Toreros, as both sides traded leads before LBSU took a 33-31 lead going
into halftime. After that, it was all 49ers.
Defense and depth "was the key for us today,"
Boychuck-Bolla said.
"We took them out of their offensive game
and covered the outside shooters, which is (the Torero's strong point)."
The 49ers will travel
to Hawaii this weekend, facing Texas on Friday at 11 a.m. for the Asahi
Rainbow Wahine Classic. |
