Long Beach State's team rebounded from
last week's fateful University of Pacific loss with a home-court sweep
over the Metro Atlantic Conference champion Friday night.
In just three games, the 49ers beat Fairfield
(15-4, 15-8, 15-3) to improve to 23-3 in all matches this year.
Fairfield's only loss this season came
from a September match against Massachusetts.
LBSU forced a sub-standard .097 hitting
average on the Stags, who had to contend with an oppressive .406 percent
by the 49ers.
The Stags were also outblocked eight to
three.
Senior outside hitter Veronica Walls stepped
up her hitting against Fairfield, finishing with 16 kills and a .700 average
for the match.
Walls was awarded player of the game for
her outstanding effort.
"Veronica's been left out lately, so we
intentionally gave her the ball," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.
Although Gimmillaro normally leaves passing
judgement in the hands of sophomore setter Keri Nishimoto, he specifically
instructed her during practice to pass the ball to Walls and sophomore
middle blocker Cheryl Weaver.
LBSU returns to The Pyramid this week to
host a Thanksgiving tournament, the last game action they will see until
the NCAA tournament begins in December.
Gimmillaro said the upcoming matches will
be intense.
"All four teams have already won their
conference championships," he said. |
