Pepperdine ekes out hoops opener

By Andres Cardenas
Daily Forty-Niner

It was close, but again the 49ers didn't get the victory cigar.

The Long Beach State men's basketball team lost a hard fought nail-biter to Pepperdine, 76-74 in front of a frenzied crowd at the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

With 32 seconds remaining, the outcome was decided on a backdoor layup by Pepperdine's guard Tommie Prince.

During the ensuing  possession, LBSU missed its first shot-attempt, but Pepperdine knocked the ball out of bounds.

After a time-out by both teams, the ball was inbounded to 49er Ramel Lloyd who was quickly doubled teamed at the 3-point line.

Lloyd passed to D'Cean Bryant, who missed a potential game winning shot beyond the 3-point line.

LBSU Head Coach Wayne Morgan said after the game the 49ers inefficiency at the free-throw line is what hurt the team. LBSU converted only 8 of 18 attempts from the line.

"That was the difference," Morgan said. "If we had shot 70 percent from the free-throw line we would have won the game."

In the first half the 49ers scored 13 unanswered points to take an early 13-4 lead.

The 49ers stretched the lead to 11 points before Pepperdine closed the first half with a 35-33 lead at halftime.

Pepperdine lead most of the way in the second half and was leading 71-62 with 4:34 left to play.

Then the 49ers came back and tied the game at 74 on a 3-point basket by Mate Milisa before giving Prince the final basket.

"I thought we had a good effort," Morgan said.

"We could have put more pressure on the ball. I thought we could have gone to the boards harder."

LBSU's senior Antrone Lee led all scorers with 19 points.

Teammate James Williams scored 17 points --15 in the second half -- and was one rebound away from a double-double with 9 rebounds.

Prince led all Wave players with 17 points and teammate Brandon Armstrong made all three of his 3-point attempts, scoring 13 before fouling out.

In the key match-up of the game, Prince provided outstanding defense by holding Lloyd to only 11 points all game.

The 49ers will host a game tonight against CS Dominguez Hills at The Pyramid.
