No melting pot
Responding to an old article in the Daily
Forty-Niner about the diversity at Cal State Long Beach and the special
flavor that it brings to our campus, I'd like to share something with you.
I have been living in Long Beach for three
years.
I came here to finish my degree and to
live in a so-called "melting pot."
I have yet to find it and probably never
will. No body will. Do you know why? It doesn't exist in Los
Angeles.
Most of us are fairly educated and we should
be the role model and the reflection of a great society, which was built
by immigrants from different parts of the world.
However, if you take a look around you
on campus, you will not find any melting pot.
Instead you will find an obvious segregation
of students.
Each culture has its own special section
on campus.
There is this invisible barrier of non-acceptance
of other cultures and races.
We may show the fake smiling face along
with couple of sweet words of welcome.
I would like to fit into that pot with
everyone else and melt into one solid alloy, that is made of different
materials but has one look.
But if you put chicken, meat and fish in
one pot to make a good meal, will it taste good?
That question has yet to be answered.
