Ice Dogs sweep Wolves

By Marten Lewerth

The Long Beach Ice Dogs improved to 10-9-1 with two victories over the Chicago Wolves last weekend at the Long Beach Arena.

After a scoreless first period featuring spectacular play from Ice Dog goalie Marcel Cousineau.

Chicago struck first, with an early goal from Chris Marinucci.

The Ice Dogs tied the game at 7:57, when Scott Thomas tapped in the rebound from Jan Nemecek's point-shot.

In the third period, the Ice Dogs picked up the pressure and scored two unanswered goals to put the game away.

The game-winner came on a power play after Jason Blake -- on loan from the Los Angeles Kings along with Jaroslav Modry --İrushed in on Chicago goalie Andrei Trefilov.

With Blake on the ice and Trefilov out of position, Scott Thomas found the puck and shot it into the wide-open net.

"I was in the right place at the right time," Thomas said.

"But you have to give credit to Blake on the goal completely because he made the play."

Anchored by Cousineau's strong play in net and a cushion goal from Pavel Rosa at 13:49, the Ice Dogs held on to win the game 3-1.

In comparison, Saturday night's game was an offensive showcase that dazzled more than 9,000 fans watching in the arena.

The teams combined for 12 goals, with nine coming on the power play.

The game was also a showcase for Mike Crowley.

The Ice Dogs' defenseman racked up five assists -- an individual game high in the IHL this season.

After a 5-5 tie in the third period, Ice Dog rookie Nils Ekman scored game-winning goal.

Blake scored an empty net goal to cap the scoring.

"I just went to the net," Ekman said.

"I knew that I didn't have much time, so I one-timed it."

The Ice Dogs play the Kansas City Blades at 7 p.m. tonight at the Long Beach Arena.
