LBSU can't overcome USC

After trading goals all game, No. 3 USC
scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 4:48 to play to
defeat No. 5 Long Beach State, 9-6.
The game wrapped up regular-season conference
competition for both teams.
Allen Basso's second goal of the game put
the Trojans (19-4, 6-2) up 7-5, the first time either team enjoyed a two-goal
lead. The 49ers (12-11, 3-5) scored again to pull within one, but USC,
the defending national champions, was just too much for LBSU to handle.
"I thought we played very well," LBSU Head
Coach Ricardo Azevedo said.
"We did the right things, and we made a
couple of little mistakes. A team as experienced as USC is going to make
you pay for mistakes."
Chris Segesman led the 49ers with three
goals. George Csaszar led the Trojans with three as well, followed by Basso
and Ivan Babic with two apiece.
The game typified the 49ers' season, staying
close against most of the top teams and getting beat up by everyone else.
Azevedo said he is not frustrated by the
team's inability to topple the big teams.
"These guys are trying very hard," he said.
"These kids are trying to improve and make the advancement."
This was the final Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation game for either team.
USC finished in third place, behind UCLA
and Stanford, and LBSU finished fifth.
The 49ers play their last regular season
game against Pepperdine Saturday afternoon at the Campus Pool. The MPSF
Tournament will be Nov. 26-27 at UC Irvine.
The No. 5 seeded 49ers will face fourth-seeded
UC Berkeley in the first round.
In a game against Cal earlier this year,
LBSU lost 10-2. |
