A myriad of local agencies and universities gathered at The Pyramid Wednesday for the annual Career/College Exploration Night, which was geared for local high school aged students.

"The idea for the event is to get high school students to know beforehand what colleges and job recruiters want from them so that they can plan for their futures," said Richard VanDerLann, public information officer at the Long Beach Unified School District.

More than 200 colleges and job recruiters were represented at the event, which was cosponsored by LBUSD and Cal State Long Beach, VanDerLann said.

The majority of the representatives were from colleges, both local and out of state.

Some of the local colleges included UC Santa Cruz, Stanford University, and USC.

Some of the out-of-state colleges were University of Notre Dame in Indiana, Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania, Antioch College in Ohio and University of Puget Sound in Washington.

Kara Taguchi, an alumni representative for the University of Puget Sound, said the event was beneficial for both her university and the high school students.

"This College/Career Exploration Night helps to get the word out about the Puget Sound University in Washington," she said.

According to Taguchi, the university has about 2,800 students, and is one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges.

"I think it was a good opportunity for students to explore different colleges and see what they had to offer," said Johnna Reed, a junior at Millikan High School.

"We found out how to get college scholarships and free money," said her mother Johnna Wozfolk, a special education teacher from Los Angeles.

Some of the corporate recruiters there included the IRS, FBI, Supercuts and the Long Beach City Park Rangers.

"We are basically the park police," said Kevin Phillips a Long Beach city park ranger.

"We cover the four large parks in Long Beach and the golf course.

We have the same authority that law officers have."
