The Long Beach State club hockey team had
a tough weekend on the road, dropping two games against No. 1 ranked Colorado
State University.
The 49ers spent the better part of the
weekend being shelled in a two-game series with the Rams at Windsor, Colorado.
After arriving at the Providence Ice Center,
the club had less than an hour to prepare before facing the top team in
the Western Division of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Rams won Friday's game 12-0 and out
shot Long Beach 54-16. 49er goalie Donavon Trumble said, the 49ers were
a bit tired and made some mental errors after an eight hour road trip.
"We really couldn't get any offense going
and they were really fast and highly skilled," Trumble said.
On Saturday night, Head Coach Raphael Borenstein
implemented a neutral-zone trap to combat Colorado's speed through the
middle of the ice.
After two periods of competitive play,
the 49ers trailed 3-2 after goals from Chris Carlson and Matt Cooper.
In the third period, 49er penalties enabled
the Rams to score four goals on Trumble and the game ended in a 7-2 win
for the Rams.
Despite the losses, Trumble said that the
whole experience was good for his team.
"We learned a lot from those games," Trumble
said.
"We've played the best team in our division,
which can only help us prepare for the rest of our games."
With a record of 3-2, the 49ers play both
Cal State Northridge and San Diego State this weekend.
