The No. 6 Long Beach State women's volleyball team moved beyond the
competition and is on its way to a fourth straight Big West Conference
title with a 3-1 victory over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night.
The 49ers (21-2 overall, 13-1 Big West Conference) lost the first game,
but reeled off three solid games to win 11-15, 15-13, 15-11, 15-4 on the
road at The Thunderdome.
The 49ers need only two more conference victories to win the Big West
Conference Western Division title and a berth in the conference title game.
Sophomore Cheryl Weaver led the 49ers in kills with 23. She also had
3.5 blocks and 18 digs. Anja Grabovac had 20 kills and Brandy Barratt added
17.
The 49ers outplayed a talented Gauchos (20-5, 10-4) team the last three
games of the match to win. The 49ers hit .340 as a team for the match,
while the Gouchos hit only .200.
Three 49er sophomores, Weaver, setter Keri Nishimoto (75 assists, 26
digs) and Tayyiba Haneef (16 kills), have contributed substantially to
a team with just five seniors.
"Our younger players are very, very good players that continue to improve,"
Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.
It was the 13th straight victory for the 49ers. The Beach has beaten
the Gauchos for the 10th consecutive time, including four straight at The
Thunderdome.
The 49ers recorded a 15-2, 15-10, 14-16, 15-4 victory over Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo Friday night in Big West action on the road at Mott Gymnasium.
Weaver led the 49ers with 26 kills; Barratt and Grabovac added 13 kills
apiece. Nishimoto contributed with 62 assists.
As a team, the 49ers hit .333, while the Mustangs struggled with a .199
hitting percentage.
The Beach will play at Nevada Thursday night, and then will host No.
5 Pacific (23-2, 13-1) on Saturday.
If Pacific and the 49ers win their next games, Saturday's showdown is
scheduled to be for the Big West Conference Western Division title. |
