Boxing fights fixed
The world of professional boxing is in an uproar after 32 people were indicted
on charges of bribery, conspiracy, racketeering and money laundering.
The charges were filed against the president of the International Boxing
Federation, his son and IBF fight promoters.
The IBF president and other top-ranking officials were charged with
taking money to fix the ranking system, according to The Associated Press.
With the recent scandals, professional boxing is beginning to look and
sound like professional wrestling.
When Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield's ear, that marked the move into
the sports entertainment arena.
Could any professional boxer get that crazy in the ring without being
scripted or told to do so?
Yeah, maybe he did spend a stint in the joint, but did that make him
so mean and hardcore?
Then the Oscar De La Hoya-Felix Trinadad fight was surrounded by controversy.
De La Hoya was favored to win the fight, but many fans were hoping Trinadad
would take home the belt.
The investigation that spurred these indictments came after the controversial
Holyfield-Lennox Lewis fight.
Maybe boxing promoters can take some tips from the World Wrestling Federation
and World Championship Wrestling.
They could learn how to sell absolutely fake sporting competitions and
get mainstream society to buy it.
That way they can still make millions of dollars and possibly stay out
of jail. |
