Cal State Long Beach science education
professor Laura Henriques was named Distinguished Science Teacher by the
California State Teacher Association at its annual conference Oct. 7.
"We're always delighted when our teachers
are recognized, rightfully so," said CSULB President Robert Maxson.
"The award couldn't be given to a better
person."
"In my courses, I try to modify my lessons,"
said Henriques, whose in-class activities may differ from those of traditional
science classes.
"I think of new ways to teach science and
different types of activities that will be student-centered."
"I don't give clear-cut answers," Henriques
said. "They get to find out for themselves."
Three recommendation letters were submitted
on Henriques' behalf to the association.
"I was pleased to nominate her because
she is a productive member of our department and she also actively participates
in many activities," said William Ritz, chairman of the science education
department, who wrote one of the letters.
Henriques has been active in national organizations
such as the National Science Teacher Association and the Association of
National Education in Science.
She has also received a grant from Microsoft,
Ritz said.
"She's very highly rated by her students,"
Ritz said. "The students independently write in to compliment her teaching."
Ritz said students have written to the
department, saying Henriques epitomizes all aspects of teaching. |
