Sometimes if you
want it bad enough, you get it. Sometimes you don't.
This was the case
with the Long Beach State womenís soccer team as it almost pulled off an
upset victory over No. 13 ranked San Diego State, in losing 3-2 in double
overtime.
The performance which
saw the 49ers last 118 minutes with a ranked team, lead LBSU Head Coach
Julie Cochran to declare her teamís performance a moral victory.
The Aztecs were the
first ranked team The Beach has ever faced in its two-year history.
"I'm considering
this quite frankly a win for us," Cochran said.
The 49ers responded
to being dominated in its first game by pushing the action against the
Aztecs early in the first half.
Long Beach State
caught a break when Aztec starting goalkeeper Katherine Judkins sprained
her hand in the first five minutes of the game.
LBSU scored first
when junior Jennifer Reott scored a goal from the top of the penalty box
on a pass from sophomore Jenna Koontz.
SDSU evened the score
at the 30 minute mark when a rebound got away from 49er goalie Jihan Elgazzar
and Aztecs' middle forward Elicia Petre one-timed a goal assisted by Nicole
Hagouel.
The 49ers regained
the lead before the half when Catlin Murphy scored on a cross by Reott.
"We had two world
class goals today," Cochran said.
Four more good scoring
opportunities were dodged by back-up Aztec goalie Linnea Quinones.
The 49ers defense
maintained a one goal lead until Kaycee McElree scored with just 16 minutes
remaining in the game, forcing overtime.
The 49er defense
continued to blockade the Aztecsí offensive attack by holding them off
the scoreboard until forward Lori LaCoursiere scored the game-winning goal
with under two minutes remaining in the second overtime.
"Defensively were
coming along," Cochran said. "We are trying a new system, a new combination
of things that worked well today."

the 49ers 16 to 12. |
