Increasing student
participation in Associated Students Inc., improving the A.S.I. image and
a commitment to diversity were among the goals announced by the A.S.I.
Senate, kicking off its first official meeting Wednesday.
"We want to have
more legislative involvement than last year and have more student participation
on student issues," said Dr. Stuart L. Farber, director of Student Life
and Development.
The Senateís goals
also include better publicity for the A.S.I., better representing its constituency
and creating more student events.
The implementation
plans for these goals will be discussed at the Sept. 8 meeting.
The Senate is incomplete
at this time because Melissa Taranillo, former senator-at-large, resigned
due to lack of time to dedicate to her position because she lost her financial
aid and had to work longer hours, said Sheryl Mauricio, A.S.I. vice president.
Senator-at-large
candidates will be required to make a presentation to the Senate, who will
vote on final approval.
Katrina McCarren
of the College of Education and Sharlette Nobles of the College of Health
and Human Services are awaiting approval by their respective colleges before
they can be appointed to the Senate.
The formal proposal
for a football team has been submitted to both President Robert Maxson
and the Association of Athletics by A.S.I. president Toby Sexton.
This is only preliminary,
Sexton said, but he added that he is hopeful for a collective effort by
school administrators.
Sexton and A.S.I.
administrator Robert Garcia, who have been jointly working on bringing
a concert to the The Pyramid, made no promises about when they will announce
the eventís official date. But Sexton did mention one possible date, Nov.
12.
The delay is caused,
in part, by safety concerns on the part of Pyramid officials, Sexton said.
Sexton would not
commit to naming the band, either. Although, Sexton guaranteed "it will
blow the doors [off of] this University." |
