Krispy Kreme to sweeten Long Beach taste buds

By Don Weberg

Something sweet is coming to Long Beach.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, a North Carolina-based food chain, is expanding to Long Beach.

The new store will be located north of the traffic circle on Los Coyotes Drive and Park Avenue.

A Del Taco fast food restaurant already stands on the proposed site and will be demolished to make way for the new Krispy Kreme store.

Long Beach will be the company's third Western location.

Las Vegas and La Habra are sites of other Western stores.

Although widely popular on the East Coast, Krispy Kreme is beginning to attract a following in the West.

"I think everybody is excited," said Carolyne Bihn of the Long Beach city planner's office.

Krispy Kreme makes a variety of doughnuts, the most popular being the glazed doughnut.

According to some doughnut lovers, the pastry, which is smaller than an average doughnut, has an addictive quality that keeps bringing people back.

The food company was not available for comment on their latest store. However, city officials appear to be happy about the business.

"I haven't heard a negative comment about them," said Greg Davy of the Long Beach Public Information Office.

"I've never had one, but I will get one," said Colin Smith, a junior criminal justice major at Cal State Long Beach.

"I've heard of them."
