Halloween marked the end of the second
most successful membership drive in the history of radio station KLON.
Loyal listeners contributed more than $780,000
to the station at Cal State Long Beach during the two-week drive.
KLON, a jazz and blues station on Upper
Campus, is supported entirely by donations and listener contributions.
"It's not here because it's a gift," KLON
News Director Nick Roman said.
"It's here because listeners have said
they like it and want to keep it on the air."
Although the drive was successful, it still
fell short of the station's $1 million goal.
KLON, which transmits to audiences in Orange
County and the entire Los Angeles basin area, requires $2 million a year
to operate.
The funds are raised in three membership
drives held throughout the year, said KLON Membership Manager Sean Heitkemper.
"We wanted to eliminate a drive," Heitkemper
said.
Roman said KLON does not ask for "really
high-priced thank-you gifts of $2,000 or $3,000."
"The goal is to get a lot of people to
give a little," he said.
However, KLON offered backstage Long Beach
Blues Festival passes to contributors of $1,500 donations.
Heitkemper said the drive produced approximately
100 of these "high-level V.I.P gifts."
Tickets to the Latin Jazz Club Caravan
were gifts to people who donated $50.
This year's caravan, to be held Nov. 18,
features the legendary Poncho Sanchez at B.B. King's Blues Club, along
with other Latin jazz artists at various locations on the caravan route.
Tickets are still available for the event. |
