Men's basketball picked as best

Long Beach State was picked to win the Big West Conference Western Division in a poll of men's basketball coaches and media during the Big West Conference Media Day on Wednesday.

The women's team was picked to finish second this season, behind nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara.

Both teams will be able to show off their skills this weekend at the annual Black and Gold scrimmages Sunday at The Pyramid.

The fun starts at noon.

Men's club soccer team goes for title

After posting a 10-1 regular season record, the Long Beach State men's club soccer team will compete in this weekend's conference regionals in Las Vegas.

The team takes on Utah State Saturday morning.]

After this weekend's game, the 49ers will travel to Phoenix to compete in the nationals Nov. 19-21.

The team is having one of its best seasons ever, said Mike Stevens, team member.

LBSU has scored its opponents 34-5 for the year.  

Volleyball takes on Northern foes

The No. 6 Long Beach State women's volleyball team will not be able to add to its home-win streak mark this weekend.

The team will be traveling up north to take on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
 
The 49ers have won 57 consecutive matches in The Pyramid.

The team has a 19-2 record overall, including 11-1 in the Big West.

Water polo takes on Air Force

The Long Beach State men's water polo team will be in action Saturday at the Campus Pool, taking on Air Force at noon.

The No. 5 49ers (9-10) have not played the No. 14 Falcons (18-8) this season.

The 49ers are 16-6 lifetime against the Falcons, defeating them 12-7 here last season. 

The game will be the first in 13 days for LBSU, who last played Oct. 24 against Stanford, a 6-3 loss. 

So far this season, the 49ers have outscored their opponents 174-144.

Senior Patrick Cochran is tied with USC's Allen Basso for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation scoring lead with 38 points, including five two-point goals.

Seniors Corey Dolley and Shane Lindstrom, along with sophomore Chris Segesman, are among the top six scorers in the conference as well.
