Ex-Clinton aide visits campus

The important thing is to do what you love
because you will be good at it, said Dee Dee Myers, former White House
press secretary and newly appointed California State University trustee
during her visit to Cal State Long Beach on Wednesday.
"In college I was interested in politics
and in the college paper," she said.
"I wasn't sure, however, what I wanted
to do."
Serving as press secretary under President
Clinton from 1993 to1994, Myers was the first woman and the youngest person
ever to hold that position.
Myers lectured to students in a class taught
by CSULB President Robert Maxson.
Later, along with five other distinguished
panelists, she participated in a leadership colloquium titled "Leadership
Realities and Choices."
"One of the things that is important to
trustees is to visit the campuses," said Myers, who was recently appointed
to the board by Gov. Gray Davis.
"I had never been here.
This is really great campus."
One of the issues Myers hopes to address
as a CSU trustee is remedial education.
Myers said an alarming number of students
that come to CSU campuses end up in remedial courses.
What is scary, she said, is that so many
college graduates come out not knowing the basics -- English and math.
The other issue she is interested in is
"Tidal Wave II," the torrent of students expected to flood California schools
in the next few years.
After leaving the White House, Myers co-hosted
the CNBC talk show "Equal Time," discussing daily political developments.
A 1983 political science graduate of Santa
Clara University, Myers is currently a political analyst and commentator.
In addition to running her own business,
Dee Dee Myers & Associates, she is a contributing editor to Vanity
Fair magazine, a regular guest on NBC's "Today" and other programs, and
a lecturer on politics, current events and women's issues. |
