The Long Beach State athletic department
announced last Thursday that the track and field team has hired Kevin Galbraith
as a new assistant coach.
Galbraith will be coaching the sprinters
and the hurdlers.
Track and Field Head Coach Andy Sythe said
Galbraith is bringing many aspects not only to his area, but also to the
whole team.
"Kevin has a great knowledge in the whole
sport, he has great communication skills, and communicates well with high
school coaches, especially in the local L.A. Basin" Sythe said.
Galbraith has been coaching since 1986
at Loyola Marymount as an assistant coach for the men's and women's cross-country
teams.
He was at LMU until 1993 when he moved
on to the club team FILA Track West, spending six years in two different
tenures as the sprint and hurdler coach from 1993-1995 and 1997 to present.
In between the two tenures was a head coaching
position at Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys, where he was in charge
of all aspects of the men's track and field program.
Galbraith's first day was Monday and said
he is excited about his new opportunity.
"It is going well, I am a little overwhelmed,"
he said.
Galbraith said the team is currently two
thirds of the way through a preseason-training program.
He said if he were to make "a whole bunch
of changes, they would not be effective or conducive to team harmony."
Galbraith is a graduate from LMU in 1981
with a degree in communications and won two letters for the cross-country
team.
He was also voted Most Valuable Runner
his senior year.
In 1991, he earned his Masters of Arts
Degree from LMU in communications. |
