SSPA elevators to receive badly needed repairs

The two elevators in the Social Science/Public
Affairs Building will soon receive a badly needed overhaul, said Larry
Brown, manager of engineering services.
The 23-year-old elevators are in "fairly
poor shape," Brown said.
Their condition is due to years of not
only routine use, but also some misuse.
"There used to be a print shop in the subbasement,"
Brown said.
"When they moved all that heavy equipment
out, one elevator got overloaded and that tweaked the floor."
Paul Schmidt, director of facilities and
technology for the College of Liberal Arts and a political science professor,
recently updated the building's tenants on the situation via e-mail. He
said the situation could cause problems for handicapped people, especially
if they need to get to the third floor.
"The plan is to rehab one elevator at a
time," Schmidt said.
"Because only one elevator goes to the
third floor, where faculty offices are located, that floor will lack access
for an extended period of time."
The elevators will get everything from
new cars to new machinery and electronics, making them "practically new,"
Brown said.
The work could not wait until summer, which
would have been more convenient, Schmidt said.
Last week, a hydraulic line coupling began
to leak fluid, disabling one elevator.
The elevators have broken down with increasing
frequency over the last year, Schmidt said.
Contractor bids for the project are due
Nov. 10, and work should begin in January and last through April 2000,
Schmidt said. |
