Former 49er joins CBA

Former Long Beach State men's basketball player Juaquin Hawkins was signed by the Fort Wayne Fury of the Continental Basketball Association on Monday.

Hawkins, who played for the 49ers from 1992-1996, was flown into Fort Wayne, Ind. on Tuesday just before the start of training camp Thursday.

"I seen him on video and seen the way he played," said Keith Smart, Fury head coach. "I liked how hard he competed."

Before signing with the Fury, Hawkins, a 1996 Big West honorable mention, had been a traveling member of the Harlem Globetrotters during the past year.

The 6-foot, 7-inch forward was one of the final cuts of the Los Angeles Clippers in last year's training camp and has played overseas in both Taiwan and China.

Smart said Hawkins is a versatile, hard-working player who is hungry for the opportunity to compete in training camp, which may give him the opportunity to earn a starting position with the Fury.

"The kid has a good head on his shoulders," said the third year Fury head coach. "He's played all around the globe, and I seen many good things he can bring to this team."

Smart said he lost about eight players to NBA squads and lacks depth at every position, which should also strengthen Hawkins' chance to make the team.

"Last year we were looking good, but then we lost so many guys to the NBA," he said. "Everybody is going to get a chance to compete this year."

The Fury finished 28-28 last year, losing in the first round to the Grand Rapids Hoops. The Fury opens up its season on Nov. 19.  In other Long Beach State basketball news:
