Despite being bruised and banged up, the
No. 6 Long Beach State women's volleyball team proved too powerful for
unranked Cal State Fullerton Saturday, sweeping the Titans (15-5, 15-3,
15-4) at The Pyramid.
"When Fullerton played its best, we played
well," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.
"The best things they could do, we stopped.
That was our night."
Cheryl Weaver, playing with a separated
shoulder, led the 49ers (19-2, 11-1) with 13 kills.
Anja Grabovac and Brandy Barratt added
seven kills apiece, including a thunderous spike from Grabovac that put
an exclamation point on the second game.
Keri Nishimoto, playing with an ankle sprain,
had 10 digs and 29 assists for The Beach.
The team came out slowly in the first
game, falling behind 3-5 before scoring the next 12 points.
From then out, the match was never really
in question.
The other "M*A*S*H*" unit member, Veronica
Walls, recovering from a broken finger, had six kills of her own.
The injuries didn't seem to worry Gimmillaro,
though.
"Those are problems, but they've all been
cleared by doctors," he said.
"[The players] are not going to be able
to function completely, but they can function well enough."
As a team, the Titans' (6-19, 2-10) kill
percentage was minus .067, compared to LBSU's .364.
The Titans also made 29 hitting errors,
while The Beach finished with a mere 11 hitting errors.
The win marked the 11th consecutive win
for The Beach, and the 34th straight win against the Titans.
It was also The Beach's 57th consecutive
home win.
On Thursday, The Beach swept UC Irvine
(15-1, 15-9, 15-1) at The Pyramid.
The team made 37 kills compared to 20 for
the Anteaters (8-15, 1-10).
The Beach hits the road Friday to take
on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 7 p.m.
They face No. 8 UC Santa Barbara Saturday
at 7 p.m. in Goleta. |
