Long Beach State's club hockey team overpowered
the San Diego State Aztecs in an 8-4 win Saturday night at the Escondido
Iceoplex.
Although they scored the first goal of
the game, the Aztecs were no match for the 49ers' offense in the first
period.
Jesse Dahl tied the score with a wrist-shot
at 14:02, and assisted on a goal for Josh Harper less than a minute later.
Hard work from Harper and Erin Moran along
the boards set up Mark Kudsi's goal at the 6-minute, 33-second mark to
make it 3-1.
The 49ers' last goal of the period came
on a two-on-one scoring opportunity.
Mike Hale sent the puck to Joseph Rizzo,
who slapped it past the Aztecs' goalie for a 4-1 lead.
After a strong start, the second period
was a disaster for the 49ers.
Defensive mistakes and penalties enabled
San Diego to score three goals and tie the game.
"We got that big lead and just fell apart,"
49er Head Coach Raphael Borenstein said.
"There's no excuse for the way we played
defense in the second period."
In the locker room between periods, Borenstein
counseled his players with a private discussion.
Immediate offensive pressure paid off less
than a minute into the period.
Josh Harper picked up a rebound and scored
the game-winner for the 49ers.
"We were all pumped up in the locker room,"
Harper said.
"We knew we had to come out and get things
going."
The 49ers' rekindled energy led to three
more.
A power play goal from defenseman Chris
Carlson gave Long Beach a 6-4 lead at 14:56.
Ryan Baker notched a flip-shot goal at
7:49, and Scott Yeske scored on another power play late in the period to
end the game 8-4.
With a 2-0 record, the 49ers travel to
Colorado this weekend for two games against Colorado State University. |
