Over fifty people packed the small Faculty
Development Center to hear about the film industry from Cal State Long
Beach alumni.
The panel discussion, called "The Hollywood
Film Production Community: CSULB Alumni and Others Discuss the Movie-Making
Process," which took place last Thursday was part of the Odyssey Project.
The small intimate atmosphere of the center
seemed to create a strange kind of aura for both panelists and the audience.
The majority of the panelists were CSULB
alumnus who included movie cameraman Greg Irwin and Jim Stellar, an editor
for the Warner Brothers show "Popular."
The moderator of the discussion was Sandy
McMillan, a professor in the film and electronic arts department.
"The reason we are having this panel discussion
is to bring some alumni back so that they can share their information about
the film industry," McMillan said.
McMillan started the discussion by telling
each panelist to share their background information and explain how they
became employed .
Stellar shared information about his University
and film industry experience.
"I got a job to work on a film as an intern,"
Stellar said of his first employment opportunity.
"I have worked on Oliver Stone's film "Nixon"
and also lots of cable shows," Stellar said.
Irwin also shared his background
information.
"The film department at CSULB is terrific,"
Irwin said.
Of his first film making experience, Irwin
said that he "got to make a public service announcement for a park. I only
got paid gas money for it."
Some of the recent feature films he has
worked on include "Fight Club" and "Deep Blue Sea." |
