High schoolers rushed to beat the towering
waves of enrollment at The Beach on Saturday by applying to the university
one month before other students.
During the Express Admission Day, Cal State
Long Beach admitted high school students for fall 2000 a month before the
university officially starts accepting applications on Nov. 1.
The event attracted 550 students with appointments
and 300 walk-ins throughout the state, said Irma Archuleta, associate director
of the office of University Outreach and School Relations.
"We want to get them through the process
to apply early, so they can be admitted," Archuleta said.
The students were privileged to be admitted
a month in advance, said Valerie Bordeaux, director of the office.
This on-site admission, which has been
held since 1995, aims to capture the students who want to come to CSULB
as their first choice, Archuleta said.
Those who could not make an appointment
lined up at 6:30 a.m., Archuleta said.
"We ran out of appointments, so we encouraged
them to come by," Archuleta said.
Charis Haines of Carpinteria High School
in Santa Barbara came as a walk-in.
"I did not remember to call to make an
appointment," said Haines, who said she wanted to study at CSULB because
it offers a major in dance.
The candidates are required to have at
least a 3.0 GPA. California State University requirements include four
years of English, three years of mathematics, one year of U.S. history
and U.S. government, one year of lab science, two years of the same foreign
language, one year of visual and performing arts and three years of approved
electives.
In addition to the above, the candidates
had to bring a completed application form and a $55 application fee.
"I will study child education to be a teacher,"
said Jenevieve Richmond of West High School in Torrance.
This year 50 more students with appointments
showed up for the event, Archuleta said.
Foreign students are excluded from this
program as their application process is complex, Bordeaux said. |
