Beach concert to blast off

By Ken Hanson

After five years and four Associated Student Inc. presidents, there is finally going to be a concert in The Pyramid.

The concert, dubbed Beach Blast '99, will feature Bay-area alternative band Smashmouth, whose radio hits include "Walking on the Sun" and "All-star."

Reel Big Fish, whose hits include "Sellout," and Black Eyed Peas are also booked for the concert, which is slated for 8 p.m. today.

The festivities are to include a tailgate party starting at 5:30 p.m. in The Pyramid parking lot with a prize giveaway.

The A.S.I. announced the concert two weeks ago. And last week the opening acts were announced.

Warming up the crowd are Los Angeles hip-hop-alternative group Black Eyed Peas and Orange County band Reel Big Fish.

The concert will be somewhat of a homecoming for two members of Reel Big Fish.

Travis Werts and Dan Regan, horn players for the band, were students at Cal State Long Beach until leaving school to go on tour with the band.

Aaron Barrett, singer and guitarist, said he is excited to play at The Pyramid.

"We haven't played in Long Beach for a long time," Barrett said.

"I expect to have a good time. I hope there are lots of people there."

A.S.I. President Toby Sexton said the ticket booth in the University Student Union has already run out of tickets twice.

The A.S.I. is planning to make more tickets available at the ticket booth today, Sexton said.

Tickets will also be available at The Pyramid box office.

Some tickets will be diverted from Ticketmaster to meet the extra demand on campus, Sexton said.

This marks the second time Reel Big Fish has played with Smashmouth and Black Eyed Peas, whose hits include "Joints and Jams."

"I'm excited to play with Smashmouth -- I love those guys," Barrett said.

"Some radio station in Iowa or Kansas got us together when 'Walking On the Sun' was getting real big."

Barrett said his band played with the Black Eyed Peas and Cypress Hill at another college show in San Diego.

"That was weird," he said.

"But we didn't get booed off stage or get anything thrown at us."

The concert marks the first concert event in The Pyramid. A.S.I. officials said they are attempting to break even with the ticket sales.

The A.S.I. signed the bands after rejections from Rage Against the Machine, Blink 182 and Sugar Ray.
