Volleyball team welcomes foes behind orange curtain

The No. 5 ranked (17-2) Long Beach State women's volleyball team will host crosstown rivals beginning tonight when it takes on UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

Irvine (8-14) has only one win in Big West Conference play and nine losses.

The last time the 49ers played at Irvine, they defeated the Anteaters in a three-game sweep on Oct. 9, and allowed them only nine total points for the match.

Fullerton was able to win at least one game against the 49ers in its home loss on Oct. 5, to LBSU.

In fact, the lone-game loss was the last time LBSU dropped a game in a match. Despite this amazing 19-game-win streak during seven matches, the 49ers actually moved down one spot in the rankings.

Previously, the 49ers were ranked No. 5 in the AVCA Polls since Sept 20.

LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said his team is trying to get a steady lineup set for the next six weeks.

"We need to have our team together," Gimmillaro said. "If we have our team together for the last six weeks, I think we can have a pretty good ball club."

Injuries have nagged LBSU front-line players Veronica Walls and Cheyrl Weaver throughout a portion of the season but are healing.

They both practiced this week and Gimmillaro said it would be a game time decision if Walls will play. He said Weaver is still experiencing some discomfort in her separated shoulder, but she should play.

Gimmillaro said that chemistry is important for his team.

"This week is very important," he said. "So we need to have our team readyÖit's the beginning of the six week stretch."

Gimmillaro also said college teams can always improve.

"Unlike pro players, college players don't peak at the top of their game. There is always room for improvement."
