The Long Beach State cross country team
heads to what may be its final meet of the season -- the Big West Championship
in Rocklin.
"What we are looking for is focused competition
where they can put forth their maximal effort," cross country Head Coach
Andy Sythe said. "I am not looking for anything spectacular, any super-human
performance Ö if we just get a consistent performance or something
equal to their best performance we are going to be in good shape."
Sythe proclaimed that the men's team has
the best shot to advance in the NCAA Regional.
In order to qualify as a team in the regional
meet, the team would need to finish in the Top 3 in the conference meet,
Sythe said. An individual would need to finish in the Top 10 at the conference
meet.
Sythe said he believes the team can place
in the Top 5 at the conference meet, which would be a very good finish
in his opinion.
Sythe also declared that Johann Appell
and Larry Henderson are the best bets to move on to the conference meet.
"With the consistency of those runners, their marks and their performances
reflects that of Top 10 finishers in the conference," Sythe said.
Sythe said he believes the teams to beat
in the men's division at the Big West meet are Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara
and Cal State Fullerton.
The women will only be sending six runners
to the Big West Conference meet and leaving behind Bree Frigo.
Sythe said he does not want to risk further
injury and save her for the track and field season.
"She is under my care, and that I consider
a serious responsibility." Sythe said. "We are going to recover what we
lost and approach our track season with our best effort."
Sythe said the women's team is going to
just scrap and try to fight for position. The teams to beat in the women's
division are UC Irvine, Utah State and Boise State.
Sythe said this weekend's meet is going
to be an important event for both teams. "It is either going to be a long
ride home, or a short one based on how they feel on their performance." |
