After losing its final home game of the
season Tuesday night, the young Long Beach State women's soccer team (6-12,
4-5) hopes to pull together to win the final two games of the season this
weekend in Utah.
LBSU will face Brigham Young University
on Thursday and the University of Utah on Saturday.
"We are playing better against teams that
are better than us," Head Coach Julie Cochran said. "When we're the underdogs,
we play more competitively."
Brigham Young University is currently ranked
No. 23 in the national soccer poll. They are undefeated at home in Provo,
Utah and have a record of 16-3.
The University of Utah will also be a challenge
for the 49ers. Although they are not ranked, their overall record is 12-5
and 5-1 in the Mountain West Conference.
Cochran said these are big games for LBSU
but wants the team to have fun and end it's second season of play happily.
"It's our last games of the season, and
I want them to have fun," Cochran said. "We're going to treat it like a
mini vacation."
The 49ers need to work on their defense,
Cochran said after Tuesday's game against Pepperdine.
"Our offense is great," Cochran said. "We
need to work on our team defense. Our team defense is lacking in the second
half."
LBSU lost 4-1 in its game against the Pepperdine
Waves when they scored three unanswered goals in the second half.
This was not the only time the 49ers lost
their momentum after the halftime break.
Last week, Cal Poly defeated the 49ers
in a similar fashion, scoring three goals in the second half.
The 49ers departed Wednesday to play their
last two games. They will return Saturday night to California.
