Students and professors in the nursing
department at Cal State Long Beach will have a chance to put theory into
practice when the department takes control of a health care clinic in Santa
Ana.
Nursing department officials have made
arrangements with the city government to take over the operation of the
Casa de Salud Family Health Clinic. Casa de Salud is aimed at providing
low-cost primary health care to individuals with limited access to care.
Students and faculty in the nursing department
will be able to take their classroom lessons to the examination room.
"We have to make sure all our students
and faculty are clinically competent," said Christine Talmadge, director
of the department of nursing. "It [the clinic] serves the purpose for our
students and faculty to practice and it also opens the door for research."
The law requires nurse practitioner students
to complete a minimum of 579 clinical hours to earn certification.
Faculty members are required also to complete
clinical hours to keep their certification.
The Orange County Board of Supervisors
approved the plan to let the nursing department take control of the clinic
after the former tenants closed the clinic without notice, leaving hundreds
of patients without health care.
The nursing department will be taking over
operation as soon as the university completes some of its licensing arrangements
and other paper work.
"This arrangement will hopefully be forever,"
said Sonja Cahill, who is the coordinator of the university's family nurse
practitioner program and will be the clinic's nurse practitioner. "The
problem is going to be monetary funds."
The county has already shown support by
giving $100,000 to help with the start-up costs.
The nursing program has also received an
additional $100,000 from two other partners ? Cal Optima and Kaiser Permanente.
The clinic will charge patients a low fee
for services, but no one will be denied service if unable to pay, Cahill
said.
She also said this is a community where
many people do not have access to health care, so this is good for residents
of Orange County. |
