Children from Pasadena and Los Angeles
came to Cal State Long Beach last weekend to enjoy a day of fun, art and
imagination.
On Make a Difference Day throughout the
nation, the Criminal Justice Student Association along with Catholic Big
Brothers had children come out and participate in several activities, including
sidewalk chalk drawing, soccer and storytelling.
"It's been a real good time -- it's a good
cause," said association member Anselmo Jara, who was just finishing playing
soccer with the kids. "For me, I am loving it. I love kids."
This event was also a part of the Amigos
program, which provides activities and mentoring programs throughout neighborhoods
in the county.
Sammy Aguilar, also a member of the association,
said the children quickly became attached to their mentor.
"I noticed that right away," Aguilar said.
"It's only been into the second hour into the program, and the kids are
already identifying with someone."
The children were also able to get some
exercise during the day, playing soccer with their mentors in a courtyard
between the Social Sciences/Public Affairs and Engineering buildings.
"Painting, playing and having fun" is how
8-year-old Demario Dunn described his day.
Dunn added that if he were not at the event,
he would probably be at home doing nothing.
The group of children and mentors took
a tour of The Pyramid, where they saw the basketball teams practice and
were able to get some of the players' autographs, Jara said.
After lunch, Jara said the student mentors
read stories to the children and designed T-shirts that the children will
be able to keep. To cap off the day, mentors presented each child with
a gift, Jara said.
"Hopefully we stay in contact beyond this,"
Aguilar said. "Hopefully this will motivate a lot of the students to get
involved with some sort of program as well." |
