The Long Beach State men's basketball team
is still less than one month away from tipping off the basketball season,
but it is already making some noise.
The 49ers men's basketball Head Coach Wayne
Morgan hired former LBSU basketball player Kevin Cutler as the men's basketball
administrative assistant and strength coach Wednesday.
Cutler will replace Brian Yankelevitz who
left the team on Monday to accept a similar position at the University
of South Florida. Former LBSU men's basketball Head Coach Seth Greenberg
coaches at USF along with former 49er assistant Clyde Vaughan.
As a 49er from 1990 to 1991, Cutler averaged
11.5 points and 6.9 rebounds in his two years at The Beach.
Cutler was the team leader in blocks and
rebounds in those two years.
Morgan said that Yankelevitz's leaving
was hard.
"Brian was an important member of our staff,"
Morgan said.
"He did a lot of things that we thought
were important. But, each one of us has divided those things up and we
are all doing a little bit more right now."
Despite the loss of Yankelevitz, the 49ers
basketball team has moved on.
With more than a week under its belt, the
team has looked good, Morgan said.
"I think they've worked hard," he said,
"they are learning and they are enthusiastic."
Even though Morgan said he was happy with
his team so far, they still have to smooth things out. The team is not
in mid-season form, he said.
"We have a lot of veterans and they've
been extremely helpful," Morgan said. "However, we have a lot of new guys
and they are still learning."
Morgan said James Williams, Keith Felton
and Travis Reed are three new players that have surprised him.
Both Williams and Felton are much better
shooters than what Morgan anticipated.
As for Reed, Morgan said the player has
shown a lot of ability and has helped the other players in practice. Reed
will become eligible next season.
The men's team will open their exhibition
season with a Black and Gold intrasquad game on Sunday at noon.
Morgan said he is looking for team execution
and how well they perform in a game situation.
The regular season opens
