Alumna creates old-style treats

A Cal State Long Beach alumna may have the answer for people looking for a special way of celebrating Halloween.

Bianca Sovich, who received her bachelor's degree in political science in 1995 and her master's degree in public administration in 1996 from CSULB, has many treats for people in search of something special for the most wicked day of the year.

Sovich is the owner and costume designer of Bianca's Divine Clothing Reproductions (located in a side room of Knightsbride Antiques on Broadway), which specializes in historic customs and clothing. Sovich has a special fondness for the Renaissance period.

"People love them [the customs] for Halloween," she said. This may just be the place some people might be looking to get a unique costume.

Sovich also runs Bard-in-the-Yard, the Long Beach Shakespeare company, which is committed to adapting classic literature from around the world. The primary icon, however, remains William Shakespeare.

"There is a tremendous amount of beautiful stuff," Kovich said, referring to the plays that Bard presents. "We choose our plays according to what people like."

While many people will be trick or treating and attending horror night specials at theme parks, others will have the opportunity to relish themselves with a Halloween favorite ? "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," by Washington Irving.

The play is a favorite because it is scary, Kovich said. Nobody knows what really happened and so it remains a mystery, she said.

"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" will show Oct. 23 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 24 and 31 at 2 p.m. at the Long Beach Senior Center. Admission and parking are free.

During her graduate work, she became involved in the Bard-in-the-Yard Shakespearean Theater. It started when she joined the board of directors. She was then asked to run the theater company, which at the time was cash-strapped and floundering.

She called upon her experience in business administration, paired it with her love for theater, and worked hard to bring the company back to life. The company has become a viable part of the community again.
