With six weeks left until the NCAA finals
and matches against Pacific and UC Santa Barbara looming, Long Beach
States women's volleyball team is suffering from an injured lineup.
Leading the team in kills, blocks and hitting
percentage, sophomore middle blocker Cheryl Weaver is recovering from a
separated shoulder, and outside hitter Veronica Walls is out with a fractured
finger.
"We have to get healthy," LBSU Head Coach
Brian Gimmillaro said. "Without a team's top starter, you're not going
to win."
Despite the injuries, LBSU was successful
over the weekend with home-court sweeps over New Mexico State on Thursday
and North Texas on Saturday. Weaver played in a limited capacity for both
matches.
The typical 49er lineup, minus Walls, began
the North Texas match with an easy win for Game 1 (15-1).
Senior Anja Grabovac hit perfect in the
first game, managing five kills of five total attacks. As a team, LBSU
hit an impressive .692 percent and forced North Texas into a negative hitting
percentage.
Freshman setter Brittany Hochevar substituted
for sophomore Keri Nishimoto, and freshman Kim Kinnell saw some valuable
playing time in game two.
North Texas forced LBSU to play catch-up
after going on a 7-point spree, but the 49ers regained control for the
win after their own 6-point run.
The 49ers broke away early in Game 3, scoring
11 consecutive points, but had a difficult time closing, attempting match
point five times.
Nishimoto served the successful match point,
which was returned on the net (15-9).
Weaver appeared in all games during Thursday's
New Mexico State match (15-4, 15-9, 15-3), finishing with 12 kills and
10 digs. Sophomore Tayyiba Haneef contributed to the win with 13
kills.
After winning game one the 49ers led game
two 14-4 when the Roadrunners scored five points.
LBSU allowed New Mexico only three points
in Game 3, to finish the match. |
