A.S.I. president leads reform
Dear Forty-Niners,
Associated Student Inc. president, Toby
Sexton, is leading the effort to push a proposal through the state legislature,
which could generate huge savings for students.
He is working very hard to eliminate or
secure a waiver of sales taxes on textbooks.
Recently, Sexton met with state Sen. Betty
Karnette and Assemblyman Alan Lowenthal seeking their advice to advance
this student initiative through the legislative process.
This worthwhile project has the potential
to save students throughout the state millions of dollars.
Sexton is the right person to advocate
for this major proposal on behalf of Cal State University students.
His influence has been exemplary since
he assumed the leadership role among all student body presidents in the
CSU system.
Sexton and other members of the California
State Student Association are committed to securing at minimum a tax credit
on the hundreds of dollars college students spend on books and other classroom
materials.
This is a great idea.
Sexton may need student volunteers to obtain
the necessary sponsorship for this legislation.
One may want to get in touch with him at
the A.S.I. office to help.
Last weekend, your classmate Erik Lind,
died when his plane crashed in Ventura County. We are all saddened when
we lose a member of the Cal State Long Beach family.
In a unique way, the 30,000 students at
our university make a large and wonderfully distinctive extended family
unit.
Students are part of my family. On behalf
of CSULB students, I sent flowers to the Lind family to let them know our
great sadness for the loss of their young son.
I know you join me in sending special thoughts
and prayers to the family.
Sincerely,
Robert C. Maxson,
