The Long Beach State club hockey team won
its home opener last Saturday night, beating Cal State Northridge, 6-4
at the Westminster Ice Palace.
The 1999-2000 season started on the road
with a 3-2 win over the UCLA Bruins on Oct. 3.
The 49ers' match with CSUN was an exhibition
game and league play begins this Saturday against SDSU at the Escondido
Iceoplex.
The first and second periods were hard-hitting
and featured plenty of scoring chances for both teams. Gritty play by the
49ers gave the Matadors six power-play opportunities, including a five-on-three
early in the second period.
Stellar goaltending from Long Beach's Donavon
Trumble and Northridge's Adam Eng kept the scoring low early in the game.
The Matadors took a 1-0 lead when Mike
Rhodes tapped in a rebound halfway through the first period. Long Beach
tied the game in the second period when Mike Hale found the puck and scored
amidst a scramble in front of the Matadors' net.
The third period erupted into a scoring
frenzy, as eight goals dazzled the bundled-up fans scattered around the
rink.
The Matadors took a 2-1 lead when Mike
Fitzpatrick snapped a wrist shot past Trumble.
Less than two minutes later, the 49ers
rallied with the first of four consecutive goals.
An efficient cycle-play behind the Matadors'
net led to the tying goal when Josh Harper fed the puck to Scott Yeske
out in front.
A few minutes later Yeske scored again,
tipping in Jesse Dahl's slap shot to give the 49ers a 3-2 lead. Long Beach's
offensive burst continued 14 seconds later, when Mike Hale's wrap-around
goal made it 4-2.
The eventual game-winner for Long Beach
came at 9:21. Harper streaked in the Matadors' zone and fed the puck to
Yeske in front of the net.
"A Northridge player had his stick in my
arm and I couldn't get the puck," Yeske said. "I got dumped, which caused
some problems for the goalie."
The last three goals of the game were all
scored on the power play. Northridge got a pair of goals from Phil
Turner and Sean Beattie, and Long Beach got one from Adam Heckathorn. |
