The application period for freshmen and
lower-division transfer students for fall 2000 has been limited to one
month, announced Cal State Long Beach officials Oct. 11.
This year, CSULB has about 1,500 more students
than last year, said CSULB President Robert Maxson in a press release.
"In an effort to slow down that growth
pattern, we will only accept applications for next year's new students
during the month of November," he said in the press release.
Last year, fall 1999 applications were
accepted from Nov. 1 to March 15, said Fay Denny, associate director of
admissions. Out of the 16,000 students who applied last year,11,400 applied
in November, Denny said.
"This year, we expect a 4 to 5 percent
increase in applications in November," Denny said.
To inform incoming students of the deadline
for fall 2000, school officials have notified counselors and principals
at all California high schools, said Armando Contreras, executive assistant
to Maxson. They also put advertisements in Time and Newsweek magazines,
he said.
"We try to see this as an effective way
to manage the enrollment," Contreras said.
Reactions to the new deadline are mixed.
"It's not fair," said Mia Johnson, a junior
majoring in business. "CSULB is one of the highest education [institutions]
around, so it should be open to anybody."
Johnson also said applications via Internet,
at www.csumentor.edu, would not
be helpful because not all students have Net access.
Rubie McClure, a counselor at Millikan
High School in Long Beach, said the new deadline is great. "We always encourage
students to complete the application by November because after that competition
is very tough," McClure said. |
