A.S.I. consolidates various commissions

The Associated Students Senate on Wednesday allowed the elimination of several executive commissions, with the possibility of more cuts to come.

The commissions to be cut, as recommended by the A.S.I. Bylaws Committee, were the A.S.I. Cultural Affairs Board, the Fall Festival Commission, the A.S.I. Kaleidoscope Commission and the A.S.I. Lectures and Forums Commission. The senators cut all without a vote.

The A.S.I. Outreach Commission was cut as well after an attempt to reinstate it failed by a vote of 7-9 with three abstentions. Fourteen votes are needed to overrule the Bylaws Committee.

According to A.S.I. training and development administrator Linda Sherwood, the Senate still needs to approve the minutes from the meeting to make the cuts official.

"Once the minutes have been approved by the Senate the cuts will take effect," Sherwood said.

The Bylaws Committee, which consists of the A.S.I. vice president, Director of Student Life and Development Stuart Farber and three senators, gave the Senate a list of commissions that they recommended for deletion from A.S.I.

The senators, after looking over the recommendations, could either approve or veto the deletions and vote on any further commissions they felt should be cut as well.

Other commissions not recommended by the committee survived a Senate call for deletion. Motions to delete commissions went to the Arts, A.S.I. Ecology, A.S.I. Health Awareness, A.S.I. Students with Disabilities and the Safety Commission.

All motions received no more than 11 votes to delete, which is short of the required 14.

Sen. Chance Decker of College of Health and Human Services, said the elimination of the Ecology and Safety Commissions would send a negative message.

"Deleting those would bring a negative condemnation even though they may provide positive results," Decker said.

The Students with Disabilities Commission may still be eliminated.

Most senators questioned A.S.I. President Toby Sexton's request that he directly supervise the Students with Disabilities Commission as well as the Women's Commission.

The Senate decided to vote on that issue at Wednesday's meeting.
