The Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman, the haunted mariner in
the legend of a ghost ship, takes over the Queen Mary, transforming the
Long Beach landmark into a haunted labyrinth of terror.
Story by
Nicola Chadwick
The renowned ship provides the perfect
setting for five horrific mazes in the fifth annual Halloween Terror Fest,
Shipwreck '99. The fest, like the ghost ship, spells doom for anyone who
dares to enter.
"Haunted Hull of Horror," "Londontowne
of Terror," "Decks of the Dead," "Marketplace of Madness" and the newest
edition, "Factory of Fears," lead brave guests through the engine room,
the behind-the-scenes working alleyways of the ship, the first-class swimming
pool and the Queen's Marketplace.
The special effects, strobes, black lights
and the deafening noise of haunted theme music propel guests through mazes
of endless ghouls, ghosts and monsters waiting to frighten brave souls
with special tricks or treats.
Many psychotic villains from favorite scary
movies are present to frighten guests out of their wits with chainsaws
and huge flesh-cutting knives.
As The Flying Dutchman was condemned to
sail the seas with a ghost crew and no port to call its home, the Queen
Mary adds a bit of the rolling waves in dry dock with a spinning tunnel
and a gang plank to walk.
Death walks the narrow halls within the
mazes as regular crew members, used to wearing specific work uniforms,
are able to entertain the ships visitors with nautical theme costumes,
horror movie mainstays or creative designs of their own.
The ship's galley comes staffed with a
demented cook serving cockroach muffins, worm surprise and blood pie, while
the sickbay has become a butcher's room with a crazed doctor and his well
oiled buzz saw.
Even the main control room comes staffed
with the skeletal remains of The Flying Dutchman's dead captain lashed
to the wheel.

the nightly dance.
