Quakes can be fun
Last weekend Southern California got a wake-up
call from Mother Nature at 2:46 a.m. It was a 7.1 wake- up call.
It's nothing new. The earth rattles beneath
our feet everyday. Sometimes more powerfully than others, but it is always
shaking.
So many people in this state are so freaked
out by earthquakes. It's no worse than a 30- or 40-second roller coaster.
Who can stand the people who come running out of their homes screaming
at the top of their lungs?
It makes one wonder how long some of these
people have been living in this state.
We happen to live in an area that is geologically
active. Deal with it. If you would rather deal with hurricanes, floods,
and tornadoes, then move back East.
Earthquakes are no scarier than the worst
roller coaster, except for the being buried alive part. They are a fact
of life on the West Coast.
Unfortunately, we cannot predict the next
time the Earth is going to do a little shimmy under our feet. But that
is part of what makes earthquakes exciting.
If we can't enjoy the feeling of swaying
to and fro in time with the Earth, then we shouldn't be living or going
to school on an active fault line.
The actual shaking during an earthquake
is not the frightening part.
It is the collapsed buildings, fires and
crime that follow. Until we are buried under all that rubble, why can't
we just enjoy the ride? |
