Slow start takes Ice Dogs on long road trip

By Marten Lewerth

The Ice Dogs split two games with the Grand Rapids Griffins at the Long Beach Arena last weekend. Now, they must prepare for six games on the road beginning tonight in Kansas City.

Resiliency was the Ice Dogs' motto on Friday night.

Trailing 1-0 in the first period, the Ice Dogs tied the score on Len Barrie's short-handed goal.

Beach's offense came to life. Ice Dogs' Nils Ekman scored on a breakaway, and Scott Thomas set up Len Barrie's second goal of the game.

"Len was in a good spot and I just tried to give it to him as quick as possible," Thomas said.

The Griffins regained the lead with two goals early in the third period.

However, the Ice Dogs rallied to tie the score 4-4 with Ekman's second goal of the night.

The game-winner for the Ice Dogs came at 11:56 after a face-off in the Griffins' zone. Wes Walz fed the puck to Zarley Zalapski who snapped a wrist shot into the back of the net. Although it looked like a goal for Zalapski, the referee determined that teammate Rob Pearson touched the puck before it went in.

"I'll be honest, I don't think I did," Pearson said after the game.

On Saturday night, the Griffins came out strong.

By the midpoint of the second period, the Griffins had a 3-0 lead. The Ice Dogs rallied with two goals from Pavel Rosa and Barrie, and went into the locker room trailing 3-2.

Early in the third period, Ekman's fifth goal of the season tied the score.

The Griffins regained the lead when Peter Schastlivy scored less than a minute later.

Trailing 4-3, the Ice Dogs applied offensive pressure, but the Griffins' defense prevailed and a late goal from Robert Petrovicky sealed a 5-3 win for the Griffins.

Afterwards, Rosa commented on the game.

"They scored a quick two goals, and we just didn't have the luck tonight to come back," Rosa said.

The 22-year-old winger from the Czech Republic also said that the upcoming six-game road trip would be a good opportunity for the team to bond and pull together.

"The team always plays hard on the road."
