Plane crash victim mourned

A Cal State Long Beach student who died
over the weekend is fondly remembered by his father and faculty members.
Erik Lind, an 18-year-old undeclared freshman
from Huntington Beach, died Friday with a friend after the plane Lind piloted
crashed in Ventura County.
"He was everything you could want in a
son," said Erik's father, Skip Lind, who is a CSULB alumnus. "He had everything
going for him."
Lind had obtained his pilot's license at
17 and wanted to become a commercial pilot, his father said.
CSULB President Robert Maxson said he sent
flowers Monday morning to Lind's family on behalf of the university.
"I cannot tell you how sad I am for him
and for his family," Maxson said. "Students are part of my family."
This semester Lind was taking classes in
astronomy, public speaking, English composition and religious studies.
Communication studies teaching assistant
Miwa Lee, who had Lind in her speech class, said he was shy and sweet.
"I miss his sweet smile," Lee said. "He
was a very nice young man."
Astronomy professor Jack Munsee said he
did not know Lind personally because his class has 187 students.
But he said Lind got an 84 score on an
astronomy test about the solar system, light properties and other basic
subjects.
"Based upon that score, he was a good student,"
Munsee said. "That put him in A or B level."
Lind and friend Tyson Stearns, 18, also
from Huntington Beach, died after their rented airplane crashed a half
mile north of Emma Woods State Beach, near Ventura. A search team found
the wreckage Saturday morning, said Larri Dillard, Federal Aviation Administration
operations officer.
The reason for the crash is still under
investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, Dillard said.
Funeral services for Lind will be held
at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Christ Presbyterian Church at 20112 Magnolia
St., Huntington Beach.
