Probation program unknown

Not many students, especially freshman, realize just how easy it is to fall below Cal State Long Beachís required 2.0 cumulative GPA. Unfortunately, they soon find out itís a lot harder to get off academic probation than to get on it.

While CSULB is quickly gaining notoriety for programs that reward students with exceptionally high grades, not much is said about the programs that help the students not doing quite as well. One of the reasons is that the programs are not doing very well, either.

The Strategies for Academic Success program, which helps students get back on track, isn't very big or very organized.

It doesn't even have a full-time staff.

Unfortunately, many students never hear of the workshops or the program. Enrollment Services notifies students of their academic status with a letter, containing a number for students to call for help, but some never call and some never receive their letters.

Since many first-time CSULB students donít know how to properly withdraw from a class, students in their first semester at CSULB automatically have all unauthorized withdrawals changed to Wís.

There are some benefits to participating in the Strategies for Academic Success program. Usually students are allowed only two semesters on probation before being disqualified.

The Strategies for Academic Success workshops, held five or six times a semester, allow students an extra semester to bring up their cumulative GPA.
