Forest service has right to party
The U.S. Forest Service
recently received severe criticism for endorsing an all-night rave.
After the all-night
party, five teen-agers were killed when their car went over a 1,200-foot
cliff.
Ken Hanson
Parents and
San Bernardino County officials had to ask themselves how the U.S. government
could approve such an activity on public lands.
The service permitted
the rave for two reasons -- money and fear of a lawsuit, two of the most
motivating forces in our great country.
A spokeswoman with
the service said it could be accused of discrimination if the service denied
the permit solely because the event was a rave.
Personally, I don't
think scrapping together a few bucks by issuing a permit for an overnight
party is such a bad idea.
If the permit stipulates
that the event promoters are responsible for security and crowd control
at the event, the service should not be criticized for trying to help sustain
itself.
