Long Beach State outhit, had more blocks and more digs, and just simply outplayed the competition in Idaho with wins over Idaho and Boise State this past weekend.

The 49ers are still tied for first place in the conference with Pacific, who also picked up two wins in Idaho.

"We stayed in control and beat them very easily," LBSU Head Coach Brian Gimmillaro said.

Idaho was the first to feel the 49ers' sting last Thursday (15-10, 15-2, 15-4), followed by Boise on Saturday (15-6, 15-4, 15-3).

Last week's Big West Player of the Week, Cheryl Weaver, who despite a sprained shoulder, had the highest hitting percentage (.654), most kills (17) and most digs (8) for the match against Idaho.

Weaver took a break Saturday night, freeing up valuable playing time for freshman Elisha Thomas.

Middle blocker Elisha Thomas single-handedly powered four blocks for the 49ers, the only solo blocks of the Boise match. 6-foot-2 Thomas also had eight kills of 15 total attacks, an average of .533 percent.

Gimmillaro said he's unsure if Weaver will return for this week's matches against New Mexico State and North Texas.

"If Cheryl doesn't play, either Elisha or Blair (Wilkes) will play for her," Gimmillaro said.

The 49ers were successful in Idaho despite the absence of senior Veronica Walls. Walls has been out of conference play for the last two weeks, tending to the needs of her ill daughter. Walls' daughter has since regained her health, and Walls is expected to return to her position as outside hitter for LBSU this Thursday, Gimmillaro said.

Making her 49er season-debut, freshman outside hitter Kim Kinell filled Wall's position for both matches. Kinell hit .556 percent against Boise State, posting five kills, four digs, and a service ace for the match.

Outside hitter Sarah Connor picked up some play time in one game during the Boise State match, adding a kill to the Beach's effort.

In fact, Gimmillaro said he was substituting players so often last week that he exhausted all of his substitution opportunities.

"We were burning all our subs," he said.

The 49ers host the next four matches 7:30 p.m on Thursday at The Pyramid, beginning with New Mexico State.
