Bible not final
Dear editor,
Mathew Cabot stated in his letter in Wednesday's
Daily Forty-Niner that "the Bible says there is a God who will hold
each of us accountable. (Jesse) Ventura's atheism says there is no God,
and therefore no accountability."
Cabot acts is if the Bible is the final
word on moral conduct -- as if all religious people follow its codes.
Millions of Buddhists, countless
members of other religions and Atheists might take offense to this belief.
People who vilify or demonize those who choose not to conform to their
own methods of worship are the ones with the problem.
Atheists don't particularly feel the need
to be held accountable for anything after they're dead. Instead, they rely
on their consciences and the criminal justice system to sort things out.
For Cabot to assume atheists feel free
to run around committing crimes and moral sins makes him a prime candidate
for a very large cup o' Joe.
Atheists make up a diverse part of our
society, and as a general rule, are not degenerates. To think otherwise
is to bury your head in the sand.
A belief in God alone does not make one
incorruptible or morally pure. A good parent can do the job of the Bible.
