A Cal State Long Beach student and his
friend died Friday evening when their Cessna 152 crashed in Ventura County.
Erik Lind, an 18-year-old CSULB freshman
from Huntington Beach, and his friend Tyson Stearns died from injuries
sustained in the crash, said James Baroni, the Ventura County coroner.
Baroni said autopsies have been performed and toxicology tests are pending.
"It's tragic whenever you have a young
man with so much promise die so young," said Toni Beron, a CSULB spokeswoman.
"We extend our sympathy to his friends and family."
A search team spotted the wreckage Saturday
morning in a brushy area a half mile north of Emma Woods State Beach, near
Ventura, after receiving its emergency signal, said Larri Dillard, a Federal
Aviation Administration operations officer for the Western-Pacific region.
She added that the National Transportation Safety Board is conducting an
investigation.
The two men had attended Edison High School
in Huntington Beach. Lind was a varsity swimmer and water polo player.
"I'm devastated," said Bruce Belcher, athletics
director at Edison. "My oldest daughter just graduated with Erik and Tyson.
They were super human beings."
Lind was an experienced pilot who obtained
his license at 17 and had 120 hours of training, Skip Lind, Erik's father,
told the Los Angeles Times. Skip, also a pilot, taught his son how to fly,
he said.
Funeral arrangements are set for Thursday
at 3 p.m., Belcher said. |
