UC Santa Barbara lost its No. 1 position
in the Big West Conference after a five-game upset last weekend at Cal
Poly.
UCSB enjoyed the brief stay in the spot
with Long Beach State and Pacific after sweeping Pacific two weeks ago
at the Spanos Center.
Currently, Pacific stands as the only immediate
conference threat in LBSU's quest for another NCAA championship.
LBSU and Pacific continue Big West action
in the Eastern Division in games with Idaho State (4-2) and Boise State
(1-5), respectively, this week. Idaho State posted conference
losses against Cal Poly and Utah State.
The 49ers shut out both Cal Poly and Utah
State in matches at The Pyramid this season. Pacific also defeated
these teams.
Sophomore middle blocker, Cheryl Weaver,
should play a big role in the 49ers' success.
Weaver was named co-player of the week
for her outstanding effort in last week's matches against UCI and Pepperdine.
Weaver is averaging 4.06 kills per game
and hitting .397 percent for all matches.
Sophomore Keri Nishimoto has stepped up
to the role of starting setter after playing second to Misty May last season.
Nishimoto broke May's single match assist
record of 87 assists, when she posted 95 assists during the UCSB match.
Nishimoto is also credited with seven aces for the season.
The tallest women's volleyball player in
49er history, sophomore Tayyiba Haneef, should also be key in the upcoming
matches.
Haneef leads the 49ers with 14 solo blocks
for the season. She comes second to teammate Weaver in total blocks with
63 for all matches. Haneef is averaging .354 percent, with 3.28 kills per
game.
The venue for the next LBSU vs.Pacific
match will be at The Pyramid in mid-November.
LBSU is still ranked No. 5 nationally,
while Pacific is the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. |
